Love and Louis XIV The Women in the Life of the Sun King by Antonia Fraser

I have switched subjects a little during my summer study of poetry, by reading about a French King during the 1600-1700's. King Louis XIV was born on a Sunday 5 September 1638. He was born to a mother in her late 30's that had already had 22 years of marriage with out children. He was also the first legitimate baby boy born in 30 years. He had a brother born 22 September 1640 and named Philippe Duc d'Orleans, or also called Monsieur. Before Louis was 5 years old his father Louis XIII would die of Tb. A regency was in charge until Louis was old enough to take his place as King. He married a Maria Theresa the Infanta of Spain, also known as Marie-Therese of Austria. She was short, frumpy, blond, large blue eyes, very porcelain skin, and very childlike. They had 6 children, he out lived all of them. He had a total of 18 children, he had had several mistresses. He ruled 72 years, dieing 4 days before his 75Th birthday. It would be his great-grandson that would succeed him. The book gives great attention to his personal life, his wives, mistresses, children, and the personality traits and temperments of all of them. The book is well researched and entertaining.

It sounds great. Louis XIV lived to a ripe old age considering the times. Must have been all that begetting. ;)
